The staff is exhausted, the number of patients keeps rising, and hope fades with each passing day. In this relentless environment, a decision is made that changes everything.

At the heart of the story
At the center of the story is Dr. Miklós Szebeni, a dedicated and experienced physician who has been pushing himself beyond human limits for months on the intensive care unit. His life is completely consumed by his work, while his own emotional balance gradually begins to falter. In an unexpected moment, however, two patients arrive in critical, life-threatening condition at the same time: Miklós’s mother, and a colleague he has worked alongside for many years.
The situation is dramatic:
Only a single ventilator remains available. Professional protocol clearly determines who should be prioritized: the younger patient with a higher chance of survival. The “law of the world,” medical ethics, and the formal system all point in the same direction.
But sometimes life comes too close to the profession.
Miklós must confront his own human weaknesses, attachments, and fears. As the tension rises, hidden conflicts and personal stories within the hospital begin to surface: – professional rivalries, – power struggles, – suppressed emotions, – friendships and long-held grievances. The weight of the decision gradually becomes unbearable, while everyone else is fighting their own battles. The sound of machines, urgent interventions, and the relentless struggle of the staff create an atmosphere reminiscent of an internal frontline of war.
